5 Simple Ways to Extend the Life of Your Washing Machine

A good washing machine should last 12–15 years in a typical Woodbridge or Dumfries household. Yet many fail before the 10-year mark. The difference almost always comes down to daily habits, not luck or brand name.

At All Year Appliance & HVAC Services, we repair every major brand daily—Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, Maytag, GE, and Bosch. These five simple practices are the ones we see in every long-lasting machine we service.

1. Never Overload the Drum

Overloading is the fastest way to destroy bearings and shock absorbers. In Northern Virginia homes with kids in sports and military families washing uniforms daily, the temptation to “fit one more load” is strong. Rule of thumb: leave a full hand-width of space at the top when the clothes are settled. An overloaded drum puts extreme sideways pressure on the main tub bearings and suspension system. Once those bearings wear, the entire tub assembly usually needs replacement.

2. Always Use HE (High-Efficiency) Detergent—Even in Top-Load Machines

Most homes in Prince William County have hard water. Regular detergent creates excessive suds that stay trapped in seals, hoses, and pumps. Over time, the leftover soap turns into a black, moldy sludge that clogs drain pumps and ruins door boots on front-loaders. Use only detergents labeled “HE.” Use the minimum recommended amount—usually half a cap for normal loads.

3. Leave the Door or Lid Open After Every Cycle

Front-load washers in humid Virginia summers develop mold and mildew inside the rubber door boot within weeks if closed immediately. Top-load machines stay damp inside the tub and dispenser drawer. Leave the door cracked or lid propped open for at least two hours after the last cycle. This single habit prevents 90 percent of the odor and seal failures we see in Woodbridge and Montclair homes.

4. Clean the Pump Filter and Dispenser Drawer Monthly

Every washing machine has a small filter that catches coins, socks, hair ties, and bra wires. In homes with pets and children, this filter clogs fast. When it does, the pump works overtime and eventually burns out. Front-load machines: the filter is behind the small panel at the bottom front. Top-load machines: usually inside the agitator or along the outer tub rim. Run an empty hot cycle with a cup of white vinegar once a month to keep hoses and the drum fresh.

5. Level the Machine and Use the Correct Cycle Settings

An unlevel washer walks across the floor during the spin cycle, putting stress on the suspension and transmission. Place a bubble level on top and adjust the feet until perfectly level front-to-back and side-to-side. Always match the cycle to the load: heavy-duty for towels and jeans, delicate for dress shirts and uniforms. Using the wrong cycle forces the motor and control board to work harder than necessary.

Bonus Local Tip for Prince William County Water

Our area has moderately hard water that leaves calcium and lime deposits inside valves and hoses. Running an empty cycle with a washing-machine cleaner tablet (Affresh or similar) every three months keeps the internal parts scale-free and extends component life.

Small Habits, Big Difference

Homeowners who follow these five habits rarely need major repairs before year 12–14. Those who skip them are the ones calling us for drum replacements, pump failures, and control board issues long before the machine should die.

Start any one of these practices today and your washer will thank you with years of reliable service.
